Well, as I'm trying to seek some more balance in my life one of the things that I decided that I needed to correct was the lack of blogging. I still like it, so why am I not doing it? I'll start off with a link.... those are always fun to post.

Tim Knowles is an artist. He specializes in capturing the motion of objects that we would otherwise consider stationary. There are pictures of the reflections of full moons in water, very cool. He's attached pens to the branches of trees and put up the resulting work, very cool indeed. Having an art background (my mother has taught me art since I was 5 and I was originally an art major at Penn State) I find the work sparse, lacking in composition, color and the work looks incomplete. In contrast to that, I find it very intriguing. Knowing a tree 'drew' this artwork is very interesting. I find it freeing, immensely interesting and amazingly complex considering what created it. Feel free to browse around the site; I think you'll find it more absorbing than you think.

EDIT: I was told that the previous link wasn't working, apparently when this is rendering the <a href="http://www.notesnerd.com/notesnerd.nsf/dx/http://www.timknowles.co.uk/Work/TreeDrawings/CircularWeepingWillow/tabid/266/Default.aspx" target="_blank">link it's adding a lot of other stuff. I'll have to check it out. Manually copy and past the link below to see it.
Link: http://www.timknowles.co.uk/Work/TreeDrawings/CircularWeepingWillow/tabid/266/Default.aspx

I'm interested to see what a drawing made in the midst of an earthquake would look like. More emotion that I expected is displayed in these pieces and I bet an earthquake would be very volatile.

Windows Vista is getting a lot of attention these days. Many bloggers are giving detailed examinations of Microsoft's successor to WIndows XP, but this is not one of them. I think that Vista stands for something. Very Irritating Settings Tucked Away.... Virtually Impotent Security That's Annoying.... Vista Is Software To Avoid... and then there is the one I found on the net: Virus Infected Switch To Apple.
Disclaimer... I have not used Vista before today.
Well, I'm not switching to Apple and I'm not saying that Vista is a total piece of crap, yet, but I am going to say that my experience with it today left a nasty taste in my mouth.
I'm setting up the new sales guy's new laptop and it came with Vista on it. Now I didn't have time to do a proper wipe and install of XP (like the rest of the company) and da boss said to just leave it there...
The OS is so different that it took me 5 minutes to figure out where 'My Computer' is (and it's not called My Computer anymore).
Trying to make Windows Explorer display in a folder view took 2 people to figure out.
Every stinkin time I did anything I was asked "Is this allowed?" by the wonderful new security scheme. Annoying prompts does not true security make...boy the Apple commercials were right on.
I went to install the 'Vista and Office 2007' CRM 3.0 addin for Outlook and it would not even run correctly.
I went to modify the hosts file and it said that I did not have access... oh did I fail to mention that I'm a Domain Administrator AND listed in the local Admin group? How much more access do I need to have? There isn't a higher level of access on a Windows Domain! The real kicker was when I moved the hosts file to my desktop, edited it and moved it back to the System32 folder... looks like the security guy in dark glasses missed that one.
Oh, and the 'Documents and Settings' folder (where all the user data is stored) is now called "Users". I wonder how many programs are going to break because of that 'little' change. I remember when they changed it to 'Documents and Settings'... geesh. They should have left that one alone.
Dealing with Vista took what is a simple task (setting up some programs on a laptop for a salesman to use) and made it an ordeal. It looks fantastic, but my productivity fell through the floor when trying to get anything done on it.
"You are coming to a sad realization, cancel or allow?... Allow."

So, I've acquired a copy of the unreleased beta of Notes 8 (ha ha.. suckers!) and I must say I like it a lot. I installed the full eclipse version over my 7.02 install. I think it's the first beta, so I can live with the quirky things (like switching to another application to have Notes take back over the screen) but one of the things that messin with my head is the change from the name 'Database' to 'Application'. Yeah, instead of 'File>Database>Properties" it's now "File>Applications>Properties" and replication is now "(Right Click) Replicate Selected Application". It literally took me a few minutes to find what I was looking for. "Holy confusion Batman!"
My early impression... very nice. I'd prefer a more 'snappy' interface and a smaller install footprint but then again this is still beta software. Lotus will get there before it's Gold.

Phil tagged me for this ( a LONG time ago) , so I figured I'd give it a whirl.

1. I have amblyopia and therefore I only use one eye to see. I have vision in the other eye, but it's very blurry. My depth perception suffers because of this, which I think is why I can't seem to hit a baseball that's thrown at more than 65 mph, but because of the fact that I don't know what it's like to see normally I really don't notice the difference.
2. I am a very distant relative of Edward Longshanks and Richard Nixon . While this does not affect me personally, I still think it's cool, if not a little disturbing at times.
3. When I graduated high school I owned an 85 Camaro Berlinetta . A year later I was traveling on the Ohio turnpike at about 85mph and hit a deer. Yeah, it was pretty bad (and you should have seen the deer too). Well, I knew a body man and I was able to have him repaint the whole car as well as put a picture of Marvin the Martian on it. That was a cool car... IMHO. Here are pictures of my old Camaro.
4. Pretty much my whole IT career has been self-taught. I was sent to a Lotus Administration class for R5 that was really good, but honestly how much can you cover in 4 days? I went to Penn State for Hotel and Restaurant Management.... what the heck was I thinking?!
5. I love a good pun. Like my father before me, I tell bad jokes and even worse puns. While he's still the master, I strive for more obscure and unexpected puns everyday. I am currently working on corrupting instructing my children on the use and appreciation of puns (and Star Wars-the original trilogy).

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that I've not blogged in a while, and if you have not noticed it...well I won't hold it against you. I've been going through a lot of personal things, some good and some not so good, but such is life and without the hard things we'd never grow and be stretched into everything God made us to be.
One of the major reasons that I've taken a break from blogging is my lack of using Notes anymore. Literally the only reason that I have right now to open up Lotus Notes is to blog. I left my position of almost 6 years as a Notes Admin/Developer to be a consultant for an IT services company this past August. My new company focuses on networking and IP telephony... not Lotus Notes. I've been feeling like I have left the team and not really had much to say that would interest the Notes community. I still listen to the Taking Notes Podcast on my iPod and I still read the RSS feeds in my reader when I have the chance but I almost fell like an outsider looking in. So feeling this way... I stopped blogging.
It came to me about 2 or 3 weeks ago as I was sitting in lovely Atlanta rush-hour traffic that I started blogging in the first place because I thought I had something of value to say to the Notes community but quickly realized that it was more than that. I like blogging. Despite the fact that I'm a bit narcissistic (aren't all bloggers a little bit?) and like to see how many web hits I have but I like to brag on my WONDERFUL family, my SMOKIN Pittsburgh Penguins and my head for picking up new technology I really do get some kind of release from blogging. So why have I stopped again?
Hence the decision was made. I'm not going to retire this blog. I'm going to keep on blogging and writing about the things that I'm going through, find funny or just want to write about. Warning content will still be techie, random and contain crude fart jokes. The techie part will not always be about Lotus Notes. I may start to write about my revelations about the world of networking and IP telephony, it amazing stuff that I find fascinating.
If I'm the outsider looking in at the party of Notes Techies... so be it. This blog is about me and it really always has been.

I'm baaaaack.... and I'd still like some suggestions for links of the week.

P.S.
I want to give this thing a facelift too. I'm tired of the 3 column black theme.

I just have to brag on my girl. She had her first dance recital this morning and she did fantastic! Of course the proud parents took pictures, and video too. She did a song from the Polar Express and then the entire dance school did a routine to 'I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus'. Very cute.
I uploaded the pictures to Flickr and you can see them here.
I also created a video based on the recording that I did with our camera. The light is bad and the memory stick filled up halfway through it but I managed to swap it out fairly quickly. You can see the video here.

I must say that I have the best kids on the planet and the best wife in the universe. I am a blessed man.

I don't stay in hotels much, but I'll be checking behind the paintings the next time I am in one. So from what I gather from this very simple, yet effective, site people stay in hotel rooms, take paintings off the walls, create artwork behind them and replace the paintings so that the artwork is hidden (hence the 'secret').
I'm thinking that this could be a great diversion for Ed Brill since he seems to travel all the time. Perhaps he can bring along some yellow and black markers and draw out some Domino-related wall tatoos.... or not. ( I'll never tell on you, Ed.) Bruce and Julian can make some of these for OpenNTF while they are at Lotusphere. Of course, if there is artwork generated at Lotusphere I would hope that we all post some pictures! Too bad I'm not going... again. >:-(
Da Link: Secret Wall Tatoos

Matt Brown from CorData beamed me the coolest, most useful Palm application that I have seen to date. I've been using Palm pilots in one form or another since 1999 and I have yet to see something that works this well and has the usefulness of this app. What is it? Google Maps for the Treo 650/700P. They also have versions that will work on other phones but I don't have those other phones. Matt showed me the program on his phone which is using the Verizon high-speed network and it was FAST. I'm using the Cingular network which isn't as fast but even so, this program works just fine. So, when I'm heading to a client site I can punch in the address of where I am and where I'm going and have directions on my phone...turn by turn. Oh, and did I mention that it's free? Booyah!
Check it out here: Treo Version
and here: Web Version
